CLEAR PENETRATING WATER REPELLENTS

Penetrating water repellents are used on absorptive substrates such as masonry block, brick, concrete, and porous stone. Some penetrating sealers are manufactured to react chemically with these substrates, forming a chemical bond that repels water. Penetrating sealers are not used over substrates such as wood, glazed terra cotta, previously painted surfaces and exposed aggregate finishes.

If your building is experiencing water infiltration issues due to absorption through the masonry units, then clear water repellents may be the solution. The proper application of clear sealers will slow the absorption of water and maintain the aesthetic appeal of the existing facade. Maintaining existing appearance is especially important for historic and culturally significant structures such as churches and historic landmarks.

Preparation is the key prior to applying any clear penetrating sealer. Dirt, biological growth, efflorescence and atmospheric staining must be thoroughly removed from surfaces before sealers are applied. Brick clad buildings with open, cracked and deteriorated mortar joints must be repointed as penetrating sealers will not bridge hairline cracks, allowing water to enter the building envelope system.
